About TAG

What is the Teen Action Group (TAG)?

TAG is a group of library teen volunteers who help with a variety of youth library programming including volunteering at programs (set-up/clean-up, help with crafts and activities, etc.), suggesting teen programs and services, and assisting with the planning of teen programs.

TAG Volunteer Opportunities

  • Assist GDL’s Youth Services Librarian at youth programs throughout the Genesee District Library system.
  • Attend monthly TAG meetings to brainstorm, plan, and implement library programs and service for teens.
  • Assist with special projects/events as they come up (prep craft materials, assemble packets, attend outreach events, etc.).

How do I join TAG?

  • Must be ages 14-17.
  • Return the following documents to your nearest Genesee District Library branch:
    1. Volunteer Application
    2. Minor Emergency Release Form
    3. Work Permit – Contact the Youth Services Librarian and they will either email you a copy or send a printed copy of a work permit to your nearest GDL branch for you to fill out. Work permits must be signed by your guardian and school. Download or learn more about work permits at michigan.gov/leo
  • Someone will reach out to you after you submit your forms to confirm that you’ve joined and to provide you with a schedule.

What do I gain from joining TAG?

  • Earn volunteer hours for school community service requirements.
  • Make new friends.
  • Suggest books, magazines, CDs, and movies for the library.
  • Contribute your input to programs and events for teens in the community.
  • Gain volunteer experience that looks great on a job or college resume.

How do I stay in TAG?

  • TAG is a seasonal commitment: we offer different TAG volunteer opportunities each season based on our programming.
    • Fall: September, October, November
    • Winter: December, January, February
    • Spring: March, April, May
    • Summer: June, July, August
  • You don’t need experience to join, but you do need to be able to attend meetings as needed, come in for extra projects, and work well independently and with the rest of the team.
  • If you’re unsure about TAG, join and try it out.
