Free Computer Classes

Classes Offered | Self-help Resources

The Genesee District Library offers many different classes for our patrons on various technology-related topics. Class sizes are limited, so registration is required. Registration for classes begins 14 days (2 weeks) before the class.

Below is a list of classes offered. These classes are listed from the most basic level to the most advanced level. Since these classes tend to build on one another, it is recommended that you start with the most basic class offered, unless you meet all of the requirements for that class.

Classes offered

  • Using a computer
    • Check Schedule/Register
    • Requirements: Patrons must have a valid GDL Library card and PIN set up on their account.
    • Class Length: 1.5 hours
    • Class Size: 6
    • Description: This hands-on class introduces people to the computer through a guided hands-on experience. You will learn the names of the parts of a computer, learn how to log into the GDL computers, and get practice using the mouse.

  • Introduction to the Internet
    • Check Schedule/Register
    • Requirements: Must complete "Using a computer" class or have a basic knowledge of computer parts, be able to use a mouse, and be able to log into the GDL computers with a valid Library barcode and PIN.
    • Class Length: 1.5 hours
    • Class Size: 6
    • Description: This hands-on class introduces people to the Internet. We cover topics including: what a web browser is and how it works, how to "surf" the Internet, and how to find things on the internet.
  • E-mail Basics
    • Requirements: Must complete "Using a computer" class or have a basic knowledge of computer parts, be able to use a mouse, and be able to log into the GDL computers with a valid Library barcode and PIN. Patrons should already have an e-mail account setup (Yahoo is preferred, but any web-based e-mail will work).
    • Class Length: 1.5 hours
    • Class Size: 6
    • Description: This hands-on class helps you understand what e-mail is and how it works, read and write e-mail messages, protect yourself from spam (unwanted e-mail), and attach files to e-mail (pictures, resumes, etc.).
  • Introduction to Word Processors
    • Check Schedule/Register
    • Requirements: Must complete "Using a computer" class or have a basic knowledge of computer parts, be able to use a mouse, and be able to log into the GDL computers with a valid Library barcode and PIN.
    • Class Length: 1.5 hours
    • Class Size: 6
    • Description: This hands-on class introduces people to word processing software. You will learn the basics of the word processing software and practice some basic concepts with hands-on exercises. We will use Microsoft Word for this class, but other word processors will be demonstrated.

  • Introduction to Spreadsheets

    • Requirements: Must complete "Using a computer" class or have a basic knowledge of computer parts, be able to use a mouse, and be able to log into the GDL computers with a valid Library barcode and PIN.
    • Class Length: 1.5 hours
    • Class Size: 6
    • Description: This hands-on class introduces people to spreadsheet software. You will learn the basics of the spreadsheet software and practice some basic concepts with hands-on exercises. We will use Microsoft Excel for this class, but other spreadsheet software will be demonstrated.
  • Introduction to Presentation Software
    • Check Schedule/Register
    • Requirements: Must complete "Using a computer" class or have a basic knowledge of computer parts, be able to use a mouse, and be able to log into the GDL computers with a valid Library barcode and PIN.
    • Class Length: 1.5 hours
    • Class Size: 6
    • Description: This hands-on class introduces people to presentation software. You will learn the basics of the presentation software and practice some basic concepts with hands-on exercises. We will use Microsoft PowerPoint for this class, but other presentation software will be demonstrated.
  • The GDL Online Research Shelf
    • Check Schedule/Register
    • Requirements: Must complete "Using a computer" class or have a basic knowledge of computer parts, be able to use a mouse, and be able to log into the GDL computers with a valid Library barcode and PIN.
    • Class Length: 1.5 hours
    • Class Size: 10
    • Description: This class illustrates many of the impressive online resources brought to you by the GDL. Including: Car repair manuals, investment/financial resources, databases of newspaper/magazine articles, children's resources, geneology resources, and many more!
  • Digital Music and Audiobooks
    • Check Schedule/Register
    • Requirements: Must complete "Using a computer" class or have a basic knowledge of computer parts, be able to use a mouse, and be able to log into the GDL computers with a valid Library barcode and PIN.
    • Class Length: 1.5 hours
    • Class Size: 10
    • Description: This class will introduce you to the basics of digital audio. You will learn what digital audio is and what digital audio products the library offers.
  • Computer Buying Guide
    • Check Schedule/Register
    • Requirements: Must complete "Using a computer" class or have a basic knowledge of computer parts, be able to use a mouse, and be able to log into the GDL computers with a valid Library barcode and PIN.
    • Class Length: 1.5 hours
    • Class Size: 10
    • Description: This lecture-style class is intended for people who need help buying a computer. We will discuss various options and how to choose a computer that is appropriate for your needs.

  • ...and other Special Topic Workshops

    • Description: These are workshops that are offered occasionally that cover some special topic that is of interest to patrons. Some example topics include: E-bay, Computer Security, Linux - Is it right for me?, An Introduction to OpenOffice, and many others.

  • Register yourself - Use our online event calendar by clicking on the "Check Schedule/Register" link for the class of intereset.
  • Ask a GDL staff member to register you
